A pinched nerve in the neck can cause radiating arm pain, weakness, numbness or pins and needles. It may also cause a headache.
A nerve in the neck can be pinched rapidly by softer material such as disc prolapse or more slowly by harder bony spurs from neck degeneration.
Non-surgical treatment includes taking pain killers, modifying activity, seeing a therapist, or trying a nerve root block to settle local inflammation.
Surgical treatment for severe and continuing symptoms includes recreating the space for the nerve and often replacing the disc through either a disc replacement or fusion.
