Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine of more than 10 degrees. It is often associated with spinal rotation.
The cause for the most common type of scoliosis (idiopathic scoliosis) often seen in teenagers is unknown. Idiopathic scoliosis is asymptomatic and treated through either observation, bracing, or for very large curves – surgery.
Other forms of scoliosis are caused by spinal bony abnormalities from birth (congenital scoliosis), neuromuscular disorders, or spinal degeneration.
Degenerative scoliosis may cause back pain or nerve compression symptoms.
The treatment for scoliosis varies, dependent on the type, size of curve, spinal balance, age of patient and symptoms.
