Sciatica
Sciatica refers to radiating leg pain due to compression of the spinal nerves in the lower lumbar spine. This commonly occurs through either compression on the nerves from disc material or various degenerative changes to the spine affecting the discs or joints that narrows the space for the nerves.
Sciatica can affect all age groups from generally 20 years of age onwards. Disc protrusions occur most commonly between the ages of 20 and 60, but can occur after that.
What people perceive as sciatica isn’t always due to nerve compression. Occasionally radiating leg pain can be caused by other conditions affecting areas of the pelvis including the hip joints or the muscles around the pelvis, but true sciatica is caused by compression of the lower lumbar nerve roots that make up the sciatic nerve which runs down the back of the leg.
When patients come and see me, usually they are aware of a problem in their spine, a disc protrusion pushing on the nerve.
